Riding the Mountainbike Event at the Blenheim Palace Bike Festival

When it comes to providing massage therapy at sports events, we don't just work with road cyclists ('roadies') but also with endurance mountainbikers. In order to give us a better perspective as therapists and to provide the athletes we treat with a better service, both myself and my colleague Martyn King (from Oxford based Backup Massage) embarked on a different kind of CPD: Actually riding the type of event we usually work in.

Okay, we didn't go straight away for the 24-hour solo experience - maybe next year! - but for starters we signed up for the 40 kilometer Offroad Sportive at Bike Blenheim Palace.

This was a tough, yet thoroughly enjoyable way to spend a Saturday. We had chosen, what was up until then, the hottest day of the year; yet at the same time the heavy rain in the days preceeding the event still meant that the trails were heavy going: A wet mud-fest in the woods and gloopy/sticky mud in the open spaces were the sun would reach.

After crossing the timed finish line, we were rewarded with a speedy downhill section on tarmac, before having to endure another climb back to Blenheim Palace itself and the true finish to the sportive. A finisher's medal and a bottle of Highland Spring were waiting for us (at this point the water felt more welcome than the medal).

Would we do it again? Absolutely. In fact, we have already been looking at other events to provide us with our next challenge. Watch this space ...
